On-Country Day Walk – Taroona Foreshore

Our next Youth Mob event is just around the corner! An On-Country Day Walk along the Taroona Foreshore.

What: Explore the 3km trail from Taroona Beach along the foreshore around to in front of Taroona High including midden sites and a traditional fish trap.

For millennia the foreshore was a popular gathering place for the Mouhenneener Aboriginal people. ‘Taroona’ is the Aboriginal name for chiton (kytun) – a shell animal found along the foreshore.

Host: Local First Nations guide and IMAS marine biologists.

Subjects covered: Tasmanian history, science – botany/marine biology. Learn about the bush and sea.

We’ve got two guides joining us from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) to tell us about the science under the sea – marine biology. A palawa Elder who will discuss the middens and fish trap in the area and their cultural significance. This will be a truly fascinating morning!
